Cascais is a town of charming old houses and cobbled streets huddled around a graceful bay on Portugal’s spectacular Estoril Coast. A short walk from its historical centre stands the Farol Design Hotel, a daring architectural project directly overlooking the sparkling waters and delightful fishing boats of the local marina.

Housed in a remodelled 19th-century mansion once owned by the Count of Cabral, the Farol was treated this year to a full-blown interior design makeover, inside and out. All spaces have been redefined in ever-so-cool black and white, making the contrast between modern, minimalist interior and historic, traditional exterior even more striking and with “Daniel” welcoming you at the entrance of the hotel. The sculpture “Daniel” is one of the German artist Florian Raiss great work.

Though Lisbon is only a 25-minute drive away and the shopping streets and esplanades of downtown Cascais right around the corner, guests may find it hard to leave the dazzling design environment of the appropriately-named Farol Design Hotel.

The terrace surrounding the original ocean-water pool has been updated with exquisite new deck chairs and chaises by the Spanish designer Gandia Blasco, soft light by the Italian design Trotty that evoke the distinct impression of floating on water, while the garden area has been rearranged to further blur the boundaries between the hotel and its stunning natural surroundings. Meanwhile, a perfect place to hang out and chill is their new lounge bar - On the Rocks, hip, intimate yet elegant.
